Government jobs in Pakistan: how PPSC, FPSC and NTS applications really work
Government job applications confuse people because each body runs its own process, its own fee and its own test. The steps below cover the common pattern; always confirm details on the body's own website, because rules and schedules change.
The main bodies
- FPSC (Federal Public Service Commission) - federal posts, including CSS.
- PPSC (Punjab), SPSC (Sindh), KPPSC (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), BPSC (Balochistan) - provincial posts.
- NTS and other testing services - many departments outsource their written test to a testing service instead of running it themselves.
The usual sequence, from advertisement to interview
- The post is advertised on the commission website and in newspapers, with eligibility (education, age, domicile) and a closing date.
- You apply online on the commission site and pay the application or test fee the advertisement names, by the method it states - many commissions accept online payment such as ATM or mobile banking, but the advertisement is the authority on method and amount.
- A roll number slip is issued before the written test; download it - it is your entry pass.
- Written test, usually multiple choice: English, general knowledge, Pakistan studies, current affairs, basic maths and subject questions.
- Meeting the cutoff and shortlisting criteria for that post may lead to an interview call; the advertisement sets the criteria. Original documents are checked at the interview.
- Final selection usually combines test and interview scores; the advertisement for each post explains its own weightage.
Practical points: where applicants slip
Most rejections are boring: a missing document, a fee deposited after the deadline, the wrong age on the closing date, or a domicile mismatch. Read the advertisement twice, note the closing date and the age cutoff date (they are often different), and keep scanned copies of your documents ready before you start the form.
Preparation books help, but the syllabus on the commission's own site is the only reliable list of what the test covers. Academy preparation is optional; many candidates prepare through self-study with past papers instead. Confirm current rules on the official sites: PPSC FAQs and FPSC.
